figuring out yourself

As humans we are wired to look for meaning. We want to feel a sense of purpose or even figure out what life is all about.

We search for meaning in our work, relationships, art and even the quiet moments of contemplation.

But if you are anything like me, your life can be filled with constant demands, which leaves little room for deep reflection. You have to get through the day, provide for your family and navigate the challenges of life.

When life is as busy as the modern life, finding meaning is not easy.

Even during moments of downtime, there are distractions to keep you busy, like scrolling endlessly on Instagram. But these activities are a momentary distraction and only provide a quick dopamine rush, they lack the substance and depth that true meaning requires.

This is where creativity comes in. When you are making something, it could be anything ( building a business, making art, writing, sculpting your body ) you are not just putting things together. You are learning to express yourself, bringing new ideas to life, shaping a new reality.

It gives you something to strive for. A goal that truly matters to you. As you invest time and effort into a project, you learn more about yourself.

  1. You learn about your strengths and weaknesses.

  2. You learn how to plan, organize and prioritize to see your project through.

  3. You build discipline and perseverance

  4. You learn how to solve problems when faced with a challenge.

  5. You learn to communicate your thoughts and ideas through your chosen medium

Whatever project you choose, the ideas you explore begin to clarify your values and beliefs.

  • Documenting your fitness journey shows you value health and discipline.

  • Building a business shows you value independence, innovation and even success.

  • Artists explore themes of love, loss, grief, joy in their work which reflect their values related to the human emotions, relationships and their search for meaning.

In essence, you are not just figuring out your project, you are figuring yourself out.

Creativity is something anyone can do, regardless of their background. It’s a powerful and practical way to give meaning to your life.

Think of it as a medium that you use to figure out what's important to you. You will probably evolve throughout your life and what matters to you today may not be meaningful tomorrow.

But if you create, at least some of your questions will be answered, right here and right now.
